The word ‘opaque’ means “impenetrable to light” and refers to the dark, inky color of our estate wines.
Bold and rich, Opaque manages to capture everything we love about big red wines. Opaque’s flagship wine is the Darkness red blend, which combines Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah, and Petit Verdot. Other standalone bottlings include unique varietals such as Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Zinfandel.
Our estate vineyard in Paso Robles is named Quarry Heights due to its steep, rocky hillsides and view of an old quarry. The head-trained vines grow on calcareous shale soils that impart a distinct minerality to the wines. These calcareous soils are very unique to Paso Robles and are derived from ancient oceans. Today, the Pacific Ocean continues to strongly influence this area with cool afternoon breezes and morning fog.
