Are you looking for something different for your dinner table beyond a chardonnay or pinot noir? It may be time to expand your palate and try newer options from American Rhone wines.

What is an American Rhone Wine?

While the original Rhone wines are produced only in the Rhone Valley of France, and must use only the recognized Rhone grape varietals, American Rhone wines continue to explore new, exquisite blends by pushing the boundaries of the French guidelines. The movement began with the introduction of classic Rhone grapes to the Paso Robles area in California in the 1980’s. These include the Syrah, Grenache, Mourvedre, Marsanne, Roussanne, and Viognier.

One of the most popular Rhone-style wines is Grenache Blanc, a bright, lemony wine. But the real beauty of the Rhone grapes comes when you start sampling the blends. Discover both spicy and fruity notes, often derived from Syrah or Grenache grapes.

Who are the Rhone Rangers?

The Rhone Rangers is a non-profit organization of American vintners focused on producing vintages that honor the history, taste, and grapes of the Rhone Valley in France. Established in the 1980’s, a few rogue winemakers began producing wine in the Rhone style, much to the consternation of the international wine scene right here in California.

As American Rhone wines earned the respect and adulation of both the community and the public, more wineries have joined the Rhone Rangers to continue to improve and expand their cellars. Rhone-style wines are now produced in California, Texas, Oregon, Washington, and Arizona.
